56 years of Eurovision Song Contest

Posted by Riku on May 24, 2012 at 6:45 AM

Today, on May 24th the Eurovision Song Contest celebrates its 56th birthday. A simple idea of the song contest has succeeded and is now stronger than ever!

Back in 1956, the first ever Eurovision Song Contest took place in Switzerland. As we know, Lys Assia won the first edition with her song "Refrain". After that, we have had 59 winners (yes, remember 1969?!) and over 1,500 songs performed on Eurovision stage. Despite world's problems, the contest has never had a gap year and is now one of the world's longest-running television programmes.

Eurovision Song Contest celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2015 and EBU is already looking at ways to celebrate it with the broadcasters. Yesterday EBU told that the future of Europe's Favourite TV-show is looking bright and the contest is constantly getting more popular especially on social media.

The final of the 57th Eurovision Song Contest will be competed in Baku on Saturday.
